View Columbus Avenue AME Zion Church. We are now in the South End of Boston, all filled-in land in the mid 1800’s. This church was founded in 1838 on Beacon Hill’s North Slope/West End neighborhood. The church moved here on Columbus Avenue in 1902.  This site was originally the home of Adath Israel, which we saw just a few minutes ago and illustrates a frequent pattern in Boston of churches becoming synagogues and synagogues becoming churches as population shifts have occurred.  The plaque on the wall tells about this history.
